6 - 8 December 2003, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia. The UID Conference in Bali, December 2003.

How business sector can play a role with civil society and the state
Indonesia is a democratic nation facing complex challenges in building a secure and sustainable future for its some 220 million people.

The Marriott Bombing on August 2003 and earlier Bali bombing on October 12, 2002 brings to fore the formidable odds the government and people of Indonesia face in overcoming and bracing for difficult circumstances that intensify and radicalize current problems.

Today?s global landscape harbors minority divisive elements that threaten to derail any peaceful development that is underway in a progressive democracy, and to further undermine efforts to balance the myriad of demands upon a diverse but united nation such as Indonesia.

The International - Indonesia Forum brings together leading representatives from diverse sectors such as government, global institutions, business and industry, academia, and NGOs, to engage their peers and discuss how the private sector can play a dynamic role engaging with the civil society and public sector in supporting and achieving social and economic progress, and contribute effectively to Indonesia's sustainable development.

By serving as a timely platform for vital ("critical" is a stronger word to convey urgency but also has some negative connotations.) discussion and interaction, the forum will not only affirm the critical role of the private sector in Indonesia but help foster greater cooperation and a learning process among the various constituencies in Indonesia, and work towards rebuilding trust between different sectors in Indonesia.
