Sowing the Seeds of Change

Recently our IDEAS Fellow Gouri Mirpuri was invited to talk about her work at the famous INK conference held this year in Goa, India. Here is her inspiring 9-minute talk.

Gouri was posted in Indonesia with with her husband, Singapore's Ambassador to Indonesia, for a total of almost 13 years over three separate postings. Although active over all these years, it was really during the last posting, that she was determined to make a lasting difference in some meaningful way. The Learning Farm was where she threw all her energy and passion. It was a perfect combination of all her interests: social entrepreneurship, youth empowerment and environmental sustainability.

Located in Cipanas, The Learning Farm is a unique residential farm outside Jakarta which teaches organic agriculture and entrepreneurial skills to vulnerable youth in Indonesia. It has won several awards, including the UN SDSN Sustainability Award two years ago.

Today, ten years later, the Farm has graduated almost 1000 young agro-entrepreneurs who have returned to sow the "seeds of change" in their communities across the archipelago.

Gouri's experiences and challenges while setting up The Learning Farm led her to also co-found the Impact HUB in Singapore, the first co-working space for social entrepreneurs in South East Asia.

Although Gouri lives in Washington DC, her heart and her life's work remain firmly in Asia. She is a wife, mother of two and an avid tennis player. And she welcomes all IDEAS FELLOWS to visit, be inspired and help in whatever way they can in a great program!
