UID Newsletter 1st and 2nd Quarters, 2010

Dear friends,
Welcome to the 14th volume of the UID newsletter! We trust you have had a good year so far and would like to update you on our foundation and its activities.

First of all, we are sad to share with you the passing of dear friend and advisor, Dr. Hadi Soesastro. Hadi died at Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta on Tuesday, 11 April, ten days after he was admitted thereto for a brain hemorrhage. He was 65. Hadi's passing is a great loss for the Indonesian and Asian intellectual communities.

During his distinguished career, Hadi taught at Columbia University and held the executive directorship of the Jakarta-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) several times. He also served as an advisor to the World Bank as well as the Asian Development Bank (ADB); in fact, if there ever were an Asian Nobel Prize for economics, he would be recognized for his effort in promoting regionalism in East Asia and the Pacific and designing structural frameworks for it.

As for UID, Hadi had been with us since the conception of our foundation back in 2002. Despite his overwhelming schedule, he tried his best to be there for us when we needed him. Among other things, we will miss his wisdom, kindness, and pleasant appearance, and we feel fortunate to have had him as an advisor and a friend...
