The United Nations (UN) in New York initiated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) once the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ended in 2015. The SDGs are a series of 17 ambitious goals to sustain the planet and humanity. The SDGs integrate and balance the three dimensions of development: Economic, Social, and Environmental. Indonesia has started the process of adopting the SDGs development agenda to integrate the targets into their national development planning.

Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute of Columbia University, initiated the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in 2012. This was to promote practical solutions for sustainable development and allow leaders to participate in an integrated approach to address the challenges. SDSN is actively participates in a process of SDGs development with UN and other stakeholders. SDSN currently has a network in 11 countries with over 200 members.
