Trip Report SIROMBU NIAS ISLAND INDONESIA
FIRST TRIP

December 2005

FIRST TRIP SECOND TRIP

1. Trip Participant:
Frans Sugiarta, Thang D Nguyen,  Dr. Enki Tan, Axel Fassio (VIS Srilanka), Paolo (VIS Srilanka)

2. Trip Period:
6 Dec 2005 ?7 Dec 2005
The group leaves Medan to Nias at 13.30.
Arrived in Binaka Airport at 15.00 and went straight to Sirombu.
Arrive in Sirombu at 19.30 and immediately checking on the actual living condition of the next 18 victims who were still living in tents or shelter to move out and get the next 18 completed houses in Monaco complex.
Enki has found out that many children in Sirombu are having malnutrition.
The villagers in Monaco complex has organized a special event, especially to welcome Enki Tan as the representative from Monaco-UID, as a token of gratitude for what Monaco-UID have done for them.
Enki, Axel, Paolo and Thang made a tour around the Monaco complex and interacted with some families.
Enki met members of the villagers in Monaco Complex and had short discussion with them.
The team went to see the condition of the old village.
the team went to the port to 'baptize' the Monaco vessel.
Enki decided to give a personal donation of USD 10,000 for UID to purchase an operational car to be used by UID team to commute between G.Sitoli ? Sirombu. The reason for this is because the rental fee is becoming more expensive after the oil price increase, from Rp 550,000 a day to Rp 900,000
Frans will make follow up finding a second hand jeep in Medan or Jakarta to fit in the budget.
Temporary dock at Sirombu port can be made by the villagers themselves, since the port is government’s property and they plan to fix it later. The villagers will give a rough budget to Frans on the next visit.
