On July 17th 2019, the very first batch of participants of BEKAL Pemimpin (Bersama Kelola Alam Adil Lestari) Program gathered in Jakarta to attend the Kick-Off Foundation Workshop as the beginning of their exciting journey. Hosted in the classroom of United in Diversity Learning Hub in Jakarta, 60 participants from 19 provinces in Indonesia representing various sectors of society were introduced to the basics of Theory U and Systems Thinking to open their heart, mind, and will through listening, as a gateway to understanding and evolving the complexities of Indonesia’s natural resource management.
BEKAL Pemimpin Program was crafted by United in Diversity with support from The David and Lucile Packard Foundation to nurture a network of emerging leaders in the environmental field to lead societal transformation towards just and sustainable management of Indonesia’s natural resource that is rooted in local wisdom. By convening key actors from environmental NGOs, local and central government, businesses and social enterprises, as well as academicians and media, we hope to weaken the barriers that tend to hinder the creation of collective understanding and collaborative solutions to our common challenges.
The program was kicked off with a four-day Foundation Workshop, and we are greatly encouraged already by observable positive changes among the participants, especially in their level of listening and the warmth with which they bring themselves into cross-sector conversations.
At the end of the Foundation Workshop, participants left UID classroom to rejoin their personal contexts where they are encouraged to exercise the leadership tools and practices introduced during the program. This independent learning space is designed to sustain their learning momentum until their next meeting in Bali on August 12 – 15 2019, where they will gather for the Sensing Workshop.
