Educational Initiatives

The United in Diversity forum promotes education and research efforts that promotes the participation of the business sector with the government and civil society sectors in advancing Indonesia’s development and progress.

In education, it will focus on educational effort, workshops and research ?both domestic and in engagement with International Institution for generating and channeling ideas and initiatives that with strengthen stability, revitalize Indonesian economy, and elevate its standing in the International Community.

Beyond that, the forum further seeks to inspire and promote a learning process among the different constituencies in Indonesia, to encourage continued engagement and to help rebuild much needed trust between diverse sectors in Indonesia.

In line with the above Forum Missions, we have conducted a few initiatives prior the Bali Conference:

1. Academic Community. Linking Indonesian academic institutions to international institutions
a. Meeting of ITB faculty with Prof. Paal Davidsen from University of Bergen, Norway in Bandung
b. Meeting of UI academic community and System Dynamics community with Prof. Paal Davidsen from University of Bergen, Dr. John Shillings, and Prof. Otto Scharmer in Jakarta

2. Business community on developing thoughts and methodologies in the multi-stakeholder leadership and system dynamics tools in inter-sector communication
a. Lunch discussion with selected invitee from Indonesian Business Community ?sponsored by Ernst & Young and ECGL
b. General discussions with members of Pacific Business Council and Rotary Club ?cosponsored by Erns & Young and ECGL

3. Civil Society and Young Leaders. Training Indonesian young leaders as inter-sector discussion facilitators. Introduction of the leadership tools and T21 modeling tool for multi stakeholder communication.

In the conference we continue to promote similar initiatives to a broader audience:

1. Tri-sector Leadership of Tomorrow ?discuss the practices, experience, and learning for leadership in an uncertain environment that need to balance the interest between businesses, government, and civil societies.
2. Bridging Distrust ?discuss the use of system dynamics tools to provide a common platform to objectively discuss interest, policies, and actions across different stakeholders across the three sectors.

In 2004, we have conducted a few follow up activities to the previous year’s theme

1. A seminar on T21 and system dynamics applications for Indonesian environment ?with participants from the business, civil society, and government sectors (June 2004)
2. A discussion between UI, ITB, LPPM, and the Millennium Institute toward the establishment of linkage and capabilities for building and supporting an Indonesian regional system dynamics model for environment, economics, and social policy (June 2004)

We are also launching a user group for System Dynamics Interest Group ?to build a community of users who would like to learn more about the use of system dynamics in the formation of environment, economics, and social policies.

We will have more programs within our mission, which will be announced as it is launched. These programs will continue to pursue a few themes previously introduced by our Forum, e.g., the multi-stakeholder leadership program, the inclusion of UID theme into mainstream academic program in lower and higher education all over the country, as well as the inclusion of UID themes in various broadcast media to educate the general public about our views.
